Who Needs a Boating License in Ohio

In Ohio, boater education requirements apply selectively based on birth year and vessel type. Individuals born on or after January 1, 1982, must obtain a boater-education card before operating a vessel powered by more than 10 horsepower. The acceptable credential is a certificate of completion from a NASBLA-approved boating course or passage of an ODNR-approved proficiency exam. The minimum operating age for vessels over 10 horsepower is 12 years old, though operators under 12 may only do so under direct supervision of someone 18 years or older. Personal watercraft have different age restrictions: no one under 16 may operate a PWC unless they are between 12 and 15 years old and have a supervising adult 18 or older aboard.

Reciprocity rules for out-of-state boater-education cards should be confirmed on the official Ohio Department of Natural Resources website, as regulations may change. All individuals subject to these requirements should verify current regulations and their specific circumstances with the state agency before operating a vessel.
