How to Get a Boating License in North Carolina
Individuals born on or after January 1, 1988 must obtain a boating-safety education certificate before operating a motorboat of 10 horsepower or greater in North Carolina. Those born before that date are not subject to this requirement.
To satisfy the education requirement, a person may complete a course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). Alternatively, a proctored equivalency exam or a valid U.S. Coast Guard operator license may serve as acceptable credentials. Once the course is completed or exam passed, the individual receives a certificate that must be carried while operating a motorboat.
