How to Get a Boating License in Connecticut

Connecticut requires all boat operators to obtain a Safe Boating Certificate (SBC) regardless of age or birth year. Operators of personal watercraft must instead complete a Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation (CPWO). The first step is to determine which credential applies based on the type of vessel being operated.

To obtain the required certificate, an individual must complete an approved boating-education course. Connecticut accepts courses that meet NASBLA (North American Safe Boating Accreditation) standards. After completing the course, the operator must pass the accompanying exam. Upon successful completion, the individual receives the credential card, which must be carried while operating the vessel.

For the current list of approved courses and complete regulatory requirements, operators should consult the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Boating Division website or contact the agency directly to confirm all applicable rules and course options.

  1. Confirm whether you're in the population this state covers (cutoff / age band).
  2. Take the accepted course: Safe Boating Certificate (SBC) for vessels; Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation (CPWO) for PWC.
  3. Pass the test and receive your card or certificate.
  4. Carry it aboard whenever you operate, and confirm the current rule on the official state page.

Carry the card every time you operate

Once you’ve earned the card, keep it aboard whenever you operate — many states require you to show it on request, and a card from one state is usually honored in another. If you’ll boat across state lines, check each state’s rule, since the covered ages and accepted credentials differ. Always confirm the current requirement on the official state agency page.
